Without the Dark there Would be no Light

It’s true that without the dark, there would be no context for light.   And since the beginning of time there has been adversity in life, for everyone, but it is the way in which we process our problems that allows us to grow as individuals and it is how we manage our wisdom gained from these experiences that defines us a human beings.

A shining example of this is a women, named Somaly Mam. She was sold into prostitution as a young child,  overcame unimaginable adversity (to put it very mildly) her story is difficult to read in parts and so undeniably tragic…but she comes out the other side of this as a crusader and has saved countless girls from a life (and death) of sexual slavery. Her story offers some upsetting insights into the nature of  humanity, but in the end leaves the reader with a motivation that anything (really..anything) can be overcome.

Founded by sexual slavery survivor, Somaly Mam, the foundation works to eradicate human trafficking, liberate its victims, and empower survivors so they can create and sustain lives of dignity. The foundation supports survivor rescue, shelter and rehabilitation programs globally with a special focus on Southeast Asia, where the trafficking of women and girls, some as young as five, is a widespread practice. The Somaly Mam Foundation also runs awareness and advocacy campaigns in North American and around the world. Join her cause to end slavery and read her book.

Nurturing the Precious Quality of Compassion

Since the beginning of our world, wars have been fought and lives have been lost over differences of opinions about which flavor of God you believe in. Still today, someone died because they believed in the wrong God (at least according to the guy holding the gun). No one knows this better than His Holiness the 14th Dali Lama having been in exile from his homeland for many decades. In his new book he engagingly presents the worlds religions through a textured lens of commonality, stressing the fundamental “sameness” in spiritual beliefs. His deeply personal understanding of and respect for the great religions, led him to know that compassion is at the heart of all of them. He says that it is a fundamental conviction that the natural capacity of the human heart is to feel concern for and connection with others, and that this constitutes a basic aspect of our nature that is shared by all human beings and a foundation for our happiness. In this respect, he says, “..there is no iota of difference between believer an unbeliever, nor between people of one race or another”. He goes on to say that all theological teachings whether religious or nonreligious aim to nurture this innate and precious quality of compassion, to develop it and perfect it. Read more.

What if ..we are only Half as Good as we Could be?

Women make up roughly half of the world, and almost half of all women live a daily existence fluctuating between significant limitation and profound misery.  Women are the most under-utilized natural resource on the planet. Uneducated, under-valued and with no access to life, women (and their children) are at the greatest risk of being poor.

Since the beginning of time, man has ruled the world. Women, to be sure, have carried their fair share of the load, some would argue more than her fair share (with child birth alone!). But it has not been until the last few hundred years that women began to really be empowered to a level that they could impact any real change in the world. Prior to that it was Plato, Newton, Galileo, Edison, Einstein, these are the names we think of in terms of shaping the world we know today.

Think of all that we have accomplished as a society in the fields of: science, education, medicine, literature, art, communications. All of these things (largely and until recently) have been invented, created and established by men.  To me, this means all that we have done as a world, since the beginning of time is little more than half of our full potential!

If we were to have empowered women from day one, we could have doubled our accomplishments.  We are only half as advanced as we could have been. Interesting  thought. Maybe this is why we don’t have a cure for cancer yet (or the common cold for that matter).

American women, we have been raised to care, we have been taught to love and we are a society of women who will (thankfully) never know what it is like to fight for our right to vote, to fight for our right to live, to fight for our right to be equal. We live under a glorious umbrella of protection that has been provided to us by women (like us – not so long ago) who wanted a better life for themselves and their daughters, future grand children (us). They wanted to help us, and they never even knew us.

There are women today, right now, who are still in their fight. They suffer silently, alone without basic (oh so basic) things that they need to live.  What if the cure for cancer is buried deep in the mind of a woman in rural Africa, who, if given the tools to live can pull herself up out of poverty and go to medical school? I want to support this woman, at least the possibility of her.

Posh Abilities translates vital social issues (related to the Health, Education, Livelihood and Protection (HELP) that disproportionately affect women) into bite-size chunks of information, and packages them in engaging ways with action items that can be regularly accessed through our social media. We offer hands in-home events, public speaking for your women’s groups and other unique local and national events.

Posh Abilities acts as a feeder organization, funneling the collective efforts of our members to the issues outlined by our well established women’s rights organizations and by empowering women from the United States with the tools and inspiration they need to begin engaging the movement toward the global empowerment of women.

How do you Define Freedom?

 

How do you define freedom? I think..the definition of freedom is largely shaped by the political body that forms it, each of our 195 countries in the world has their own definition and political system in which a variety of complex circumstances and cultural variations exist. But in all of these countries it is evident that a human being without a voice within the political system that defines them, will be more likely to be discriminated against in terms of their rights to basic health, to information and education, toearn a living and to be protected by laws that allow for their safety. The vast majority of these silent voices in the most desperate places in the world are women (and their young children). Posh Abilities partners with international human rights groups to provide our members with quick access to information about topics and projects that help other women earn their voices. Political advocacy is an effort to give a voice to the voiceless.

If you can’t vote…you don’t count!

In the United States women are born with more social, economical and political freedoms than the majority of the other 194 countries in the world. Posh Abilities was founded on the idea that it is a great honor, as women of the United States, to advocate for those women who have limited control of not only their daily lives, but of their futures and those of their families.  In many countries women lack the basic protections of fundamental human rights laws, and without the right to vote, to own property or to earn a living women are vulnerable to their countries law makers who will almost exclusively pass laws that protect people who “count”.

 

If you can not vote, if you can not own property and if you do not have the ability to make a living…you DO NOT COUNT to policy makers.

 

Posh Abilities supports a core group of international humanitarian organizations who are central to understanding the national and international policies that affect women. Through our Advocacy Projects, members are connected with key issues and projects in support of women’s rights at home and around the globe.  Our projects can be as simples as signing an email petition or by joining thousands of others as we lobby congress in support of global women’s issues.

Climbing Mountains beyond Mountains

There is an ancient Haitian proverb, loosely translated “Mountains beyond Mountains”, means that once you overcome one challenge there is always another, and another, such is life.e (a mountain)  This universal truism is clearly represented in the  life of Dr. Paul Farmer a Harvard Professor, infectious disease specialist and anthropologist who has made world-changing efforts to provide medical care in the poorest of countries in the direst of circumstances.  This book is a powerful and moving story of Dr. Farmer’s time in Haiti, Peru, Cuba and Russia, one man’s dedication to making a difference in a broken world that he is in love with.
